Prescription Drug Coverage

What is Prescription Drug Coverage (Medicare Part D)?

Medicare Part D is a federal program that provides coverage for prescription medications. It helps lower out-of-pocket costs for both brand-name and generic drugs, making essential prescriptions more affordable and accessible.

Part D plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare and can be added to Original Medicare or included in a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C).

How Does Medicare Part D Work?

Medicare Part D provides prescription drug coverage through private insurance plans. You pay a monthly premium and, after meeting an annual deductible, share costs through copayments or coinsurance.

Coverage is divided into stages: Initial Coverage, Coverage Gap (Donut Hole), and Catastrophic Coverage. Costs depend on your plan’s formulary (drug list) and whether you use preferred pharmacies.

It’s essential to compare plans to ensure your medications are covered and costs are manageable.  Additionally,  you can add Part D to Original Medicare or include it within a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C).
